ABSTRACT

Farmer Producer Companies are emerging as an innovative model to transform agriculture into a profitable business venture by leveraging the collectives of small and marginal farmers through economies of scale with better bargaining power, better value addition facilities, better access to farming technologies, better input supply, and better market accessibility. Financial performance indicates the financial health and resource utilization efficiency of a business organization or a company over a certain period. In the present study, a comparative analysis of balance sheets and income statements was made for five different Farmer Producer Companies of Eastern Uttar Pradesh to identify the pattern of change in various financial components from 2019-20 to 2020-21. Based on the analysis, the important findings were that reserve and surpluses were significantly increased for most of the FPCs for future business expansion, three FPCs reported increased total liabilities, and all of the FPCs managed to grow their total assets compared to the previous year. The revenue growth rate for three FPCs was below par. The performance of the FPCs in respective to net profit after tax was asymmetric. Out of five, only four FPCs were able to meet all the operational expenses from the revenue generated out of business activities and hence, considered profit-making. Moreover, the overall financial performance of the FPCs was disrupted due to the wrath of the Covid-19 pandemic. © Economic Affairs (New Delhi). All rights reserved

ABSTRACT

Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is common in Long Covid. Physical counterpressure manoeuvres (PCM) may improve OI in other disorders. We characterised the blood pressure-rising effect of PCM using surface electromyography (sEMG) and investigated its association with fatigue in adults with Long Covid. Participants performed an active stand with beat-to-beat hemodynamic monitoring and sEMG of both thighs, including PCM at 3-minutes post-stand. Multivariable linear regression investigated the association between change in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and change in normalised root mean square (RMS) of sEMG amplitude, controlling for confounders including the Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFQ). In 90 participants (mean age 46), mean SBP rise with PCM was 13.7 (SD 9.0) mmHg. In regression, SBP change was significantly, directly associated with change in RMS sEMG ( 0.25 , 95% CI 0.07-0.43, P = 0.007);however, CFQ was not significant. PCM measured by sEMG augmented SBP without the influence of fatigue. Copyright © 2013 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Electricity is currently one of the most popular sources of energy. Considering such widespread use of electric energy, we may ask, what is the economic cost of producing and supplying it? The climate crisis and the social pressure associated with it have triggered the necessity to make further investments in renewable and low-emission energy sources, while the COVID-19 pandemic has abruptly limited electricity consumption in industry. All these factors can have an impact on disruptions or loss in the liquidity of companies responsible for supplying electricity to end users. Guaranteeing cash flow for energy sector entities is a prerequisite for energy supply continuity. In this context, the selection and application of reliable sources of information are vital for the management of the financial liquidity of energy sector entities. The aim of this article is to prove the value of the financial information of individual (IFR) and consolidated financial statements (CFR) essential for the indicative liquidity assessment of Polish energy groups in 2018–2021. The hypothesis of this study is that individual and consolidated statements do not offer coincident analytical data due to the diversified role of their parent undertakings. We have applied indicative liquidity assessment analysis from a static and dynamic perspective to 2018–2021, on the basis of individual and consolidated financial statements. The results clearly show high dysfunction in the application of indicative liquidity assessment in the case of the individual financial statement of the parent company. This is mainly due to the role parent companies play in Polish energy sector groups, as they are mainly responsible for support processes. ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection are prevalent diseases globally and emerging evidence demonstrates the bidirectional association between the two diseases. Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for HCV have a high treatment success rate and can significantly reduce the risks of short and long-term complications of HCV infection. However, despite the evidence of the association between diabetes and HCV and the benefits of anti-HCV treatment, previously published guidelines did not focus on the universal HCV screening for patients with diabetes and their subsequent management once confirmed as having HCV viremia. Nonetheless, screening for HCV among patients with diabetes will contribute to the eradication of HCV infection. Thus, the three major Taiwan medical associations of diabetes and liver diseases endorsed a total of 14 experts in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology, diabetology, and epidemiology to convene and formulate a consensus statement on HCV screening and management among patients with diabetes. Based on recent studies and guidelines as well as from real-world clinical experiences, the Taiwan experts reached a consensus that provides a straightforward approach to HCV screening, treatment, and monitoring of patients with diabetes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The high-quality evidence on managing COVID-19 patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support is insufficient. Furthermore, there is little consensus on allocating ECMO resources when scarce. The paucity of evidence and the need for guidance on controversial topics required an international expert consensus statement to understand the role of ECMO in COVID-19 better. Twenty-two international ECMO experts worldwide work together to interpret the most recent findings of the evolving published research, statement formulation, and voting to achieve consensus. OBJECTIVES: To guide the next generation of ECMO practitioners during future pandemics on tackling controversial topics pertaining to using ECMO for patients with COVID-19-related severe ARDS. METHODS: The scientific committee was assembled of five chairpersons with more than 5 years of ECMO experience and a critical care background. Their roles were modifying and restructuring the panel's questions and, assisting with statement formulation in addition to expert composition and literature review. Experts are identified based on their clinical experience with ECMO (minimum of 5 years) and previous academic activity on a global scale, with a focus on diversity in gender, geography, area of expertise, and level of seniority. We used the modified Delphi technique rounds and the nominal group technique (NGT) through three face-to-face meetings and the voting on the statement was conducted anonymously. The entire process was planned to be carried out in five phases: identifying the gap of knowledge, validation, statement formulation, voting, and drafting, respectively. RESULTS: In phase I, the scientific committee obtained 52 questions on controversial topics in ECMO for COVID-19, further reviewed for duplication and redundancy in phase II, resulting in nine domains with 32 questions with a validation rate exceeding 75% (Fig. 1). In phase III, 25 questions were used to formulate 14 statements, and six questions achieved no consensus on the statements. In phase IV, two voting rounds resulted in 14 statements that reached a consensus are included in four domains which are: patient selection, ECMO clinical management, operational and logistics management, and ethics. CONCLUSION: Three years after the onset of COVID-19, our understanding of the role of ECMO has evolved. However, it is incomplete. Tota14 statements achieved consensus; included in four domains discussing patient selection, clinical ECMO management, operational and logistic ECMO management and ethics to guide next-generation ECMO providers during future pandemic situations.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cardiovascular disorders have long been considered as one of the leading causes of mortality in India, which when presented with concurrent Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) infection becomes even more fatal. Evidence suggests that COVID-19 affects the cardiovascular system by causing exuberant cytokinaemia, which results in endothelial inflammation and microvascular thrombosis, leading to multiorgan failure. Aim: To analyse the outcome of the asymptomatic COVID-19 patients presenting with cardiac angina during the second wave of COVID-19 in India. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective data analysis of asymptomatic COVID-19 patients hospitalised with angina was conducted between April 2021 to June 2021 at Bardhhaman Medical College and Hospital located at Bardhdhaman district of West Bengal, India. A total of 1235 patients underwent all regular biochemical, haematological and cardiac investigations after undergoing test for COVID-19 test. Data was retrospectively collected. The outcome of these patients was analysed. Estimation of mean, standard deviation, percentage, p-value (from Pearson's correlation) was performed to establish the aim of the study. Results: Seventy six out of 1235 patients tested positive for asymptomatic COVID-19. The mean age of this study population was 55.075 +/- 10.95 years, of which were 55 male and 21 female. Hypertension was the most prevalent co-morbidity followed by diabetes, 73 (96%) presented with chest pain. A total of 47(62%) of these 76 patients had ST Elevated Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). Eleven (14.4%) underwent Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) whereas 36 (47.3%) underwent fibrinolytic therapy with tenecteplase, followed by secondary PCI in 27 (75%) of them. Rest 29 (38%) were medically managed for unstable angina. Mortality rate was as low as 6.5%. Age and comorbidity were the contributing factors for STEMI among asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. Conclusion: The results indicate that age and comorbidity are the factors, which lead to death or increases the life risk among patients with asymptomatic COVID-19. In this study, we have established that for the current patient population STEMI and age are negatively corelated. Medical management with thrombolytic agent became a lot more accepted in this scenario. PCI still remains the gold standard to treat myocardial infarction. It is recommended that there should be an ICMR guided protocol for the management of such cases with the concurrent COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to see if total direct taxes (TDT) affect the growth of the country's income and well-being or stagnation and gaps based on the variables raised: Corporate Income Tax (CIT), Personal Income Tax (TAP), Property Taxes (PT), Other Direct Taxes (ODT), as well as to explore which variables had a greater impact on income growth, welfare or gaps before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Theoretical framework: First, this research brought a new approach to explore the income statement through total direct taxes before and during the Covid-19 pandemic, then analyzed which variables there were increases in income, gaps, or welfare. Finally, an overview is given on how to promote and continuously increase state revenues and reduce gaps through TDTs. Design/methodology/approach: The data were collected at the local and central levels in the state of Kosovo based on the audited financial and economic reports for the period (2014-2021) as well as through interviews with officials and directors in the finance department and with the Minister of Finance during 2017-2018, analyzing in detail all financial items for direct tax variables and their impact on government revenues, on the country's well-being or economic-financial gaps through descriptive analysis, factorial analysis, reliability analysis, multiple regression analysis using SPSS version 23.0 for Windows. Findings: Based on analyzes such as PCA Matrix Loading Factors, PCA Model Summary- Multiple Linear Regression, Coefficients- TDT, the results showed that the variables [(CIT=98%, R=.980, Sig=.000, F=148,854), (PIT=99%, R=.987, Sig.=000, F=220,841), (PT=90%, R=.902, Sig.=.000, F=26,240)] are quite important and that they have influenced the increase in income and well-being of the country, while the variable (OTD=39%, R=.390, Sig.=000, F=1.079) has not influenced the well-being of the country during this period and that there are still some gaps that need to be improved before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, greater weight in the collection of (TDTs) and an increase in well-being have been shown (PIT=.975, Cons=.136, Acu=99%), while gaps have been shown (ODT: Cons=.209, Acu =39%). It is recommended that the state should be careful in collecting revenues from (TDT) and especially (OTDs). Research, Practical & Social implications: The limitations and implications of this research are that the study period is (8) years, the number of variables is limited to only (4) with their sub-variables (48), and it is only an analysis of one country. Therefore, for further analysis, a larger number of countries, periods, and variables can be taken into the research. Originality/value: It will help countries to see where there is an increase in income and well-being and where there are gaps and a decrease in income and based on this, they should be careful in creating policies to encourage and increase income through (TDTs) © 2022 AOS-Estratagia and Inovacao. ABSTRACT

Introduction: Digital social contact is increasingly being used, which accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to determine the consensus among stakeholders regarding recommendations for the use and facilitation of digital social contact for people with intellectual disabilities living in sheltered care facility homes. Method(s): This consensus statement was developed in three consecutive rounds of questionnaires (rapid online modified Delphi design). The expert-groups included people with disabilities (N = 6) and their families (N = 10), support professionals (N = 9), behavioural consultants (N = 7), managers of sheltered care facility homes (N = 10), scientists and industry experts (N = 15). Finding(s): Four main themes were identified: 1. Reasons for and types of digital social contact;2. Support and training needs;3. Materials and other requirements needed to enable digital social contact;and 4. Best practices and future developments. For each theme, several recommendations were formulated. Discussion and conclusion: This study resulted in a consensus statement aimed mainly at care professionals, families of people with intellectual disabilities and managers of sheltered care facility homes. Findings show that digital social contact can contribute to societal participation of people with disabilities. Additionally, tailored exploration of digital contact is recommended, as well as aiming for inclusive-by-design technology developments with developers and stakeholders working together.Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). ABSTRACT

At World Trade Organization (WTO), nothing is agreed until everything is agreed and until everyone agrees at the negotiating tables, and that ‘magic' moment has been difficult to arrive at. Some WTO Members have argued that if all Members cannot move ahead together with the acceptance of new rules, the Members who are able and willing to move ahead should be provided with the required space to do so. Some Members have indeed chosen to push ahead as they have recently sought progress in negotiations through the Joint Statement Initiatives (JSIs). The JSI proponents claim that JSIs can contribute to building a more responsive and relevant WTO – which will be critical to restoring global trade and economic growth in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. Others have staunchly opposed such plurilateral attempts at trade liberalization on various grounds, often labelling them as attempts to circumvent the WTO's core tenets of multilateralism. The article contributes to this debate, as the authors assess different routes through which JSIs can be added to the WTO acquis and the WTO-compatibility of each of these routes. It then assesses the possible detrimental impact that JSIs can have on the essence and fabric of the multilateral trading system (MTS). © 2023 Kluwer Law International BV, The Netherlands.

ABSTRACT

In a harsh and inflexible system that offers few opportunities for judges to reevaluate the sentences they impose when circumstances warrant, federal compassionate release holds great promise. When the First Step Act was passed in 2018, sentencing judges were freed from the restrictive Sentencing Commission policy statement that limited the circumstances under which judges could grant relief. Exercising that newfound discretion, judges began granting sentencing reductions for reasons not enumerated in the outdated policy statement, such as COVID-19 and excessive and unjust sentences. Judges in certain federal circuits, however, have been increasingly constrained by appellate case law that cabins judicial discretion. This article makes the case for the Sentencing Commission to expand and codify in its forthcoming policy statement judicial discretion to identify unenumerated "extraordinary and compelling” circumstances warranting a sentencing reduction and to reject circuit courts' narrowing of compassionate release. We illuminate how judges have mindfully used their discretion over the past four years to grant relief for a variety of extraordinary and compelling reasons. In particular, this article describes our Clinic's successful litigation for victims of law enforcement's stash house reverse sting operations as illustrative of the need for expanded judicial discretion in compassionate release. Enshrining that discretion in an updated policy statement would provide an administrable safety valve consistent with Congress's intent that compassionate release be a mechanism to remedy truly unjust sentences. Only then will compassionate release be truly compassionate.

ABSTRACT

The paper deals with the actual costs of equity in the sector NACE 'H' (transportation and storage). The paid-out profit shares, expressed through changes in the retained earnings of previous years and the profit or loss for the current accounting period, will be considered as actual incurred costs. The input data will be obtained from the Cribis / Albertina database and will be based on the earnings in the transport sector for the period 2016-2020. As the research sample, only active and profitable companies will be selected. Subsequently, 5 categories will be created according to the volume of sales. The results show that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the transport sector, except for Category 4 with a turnover of CZK 100,0, 000 to CZK 1,000,000,000, in which both retained earnings from previous years and the profit for the current accounting period grew. Regarding the share of retained earnings from past years in the earnings of the current accounting period, category 4 shows the sharpest decrease. The average percentage in each category was 82%. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aims to focus on the impact of COVID-19 on the Spanish wine sector and the financial resilience of Spanish wineries in the period 2019–2020. Design/methodology/approach: The data set contains 355 limited companies of the Spanish wine sector which were active in the period 2019–2020. The explanatory variables used are size and age of the company, exports, subsidies and gender distribution in the workforce. The financial statements of the companies are treated as compositional data, using log-ratios for asset structure, leverage, margin, turnover and debt maturity. The first-difference estimator is used for the panel-data model relating the differences in the log-ratios between 2020 and 2019 to the explanatory variables. Findings: In average terms, margin and turnover have significantly worsened between 2019 and 2020, while debt maturity has increased. A larger firm size, a greater age, a higher share of women in the workforce and subsidies have made wineries more resilient between 2019 and 2020. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first financial statement analysis of the impact of COVID-19 in the winery sector. © 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.

ABSTRACT

Long-COVID, a term used to describe ongoing symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection, parallels the course of other post-viral syndromes. Neuropsychiatric symptoms of Long-COVID can be persistent and interfere with quality of life and functioning. Within the biopsychosocial framework of chronic illness, rehabilitation professionals can address the neuropsychiatric sequelae of Long-COVID. However, current practice models are not designed to address concurrent psychiatric and cognitive symptoms in adults living with Long-COVID. Thus, we present a biopsychosocial framework for Long-COVID and provide treatment strategies based on evidence from current literature of post-viral chronic illness. These recommendations will guide rehabilitation professionals in 1) identifying common neuropsychiatric symptoms in Long-COVID that can be targeted for intervention and 2) addressing these symptoms via integrative interventions taking into account the biopsychosocial presentation of Long-COVID symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The effects of different COVID-19 therapeutic strategies on cardiac function are uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of different medical treatments on biventricular function in patients who had recovered from COVID-19. Materials and Methods: Speckle-tracking echocardiography was performed to examine the biventricular myocardial function of patients at follow-up visits after recovery from COVID-19. The patients were divided into two groups based on the medication they used during the active disease: favipiravir (FAV;n = 60) or hydroxychloroquine (HCQ;n = 60). A comparison was made with risk factor-matched controls (n = 41). Results: A total of 161 patients were included in the study. The left ventricular end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, end-diastolic diameter, and end-systolic diameter were higher in the HCQ and FAV groups compared to the controls, while the left ventricular ejection fraction was similar between all the groups. The right ventricular diameter was increased, and the systolic pulmonary artery pressure was higher in the HCQ and FAV groups compared to the controls. The left ventricular global longitudinal strain (-18 +/- 6.6 vs. -19.7 +/- 4.4 vs. -20.4 +/- 5, respectively), the right ventricular global longitudinal strain (-19.8 +/- 7.5 vs. -22.2 +/- 6 vs. -23.4 +/- 6.2, respectively), and the right ventricular free wall strain (-16.9 +/- 3.6 vs. -18.2 +/- 2.4 vs. -19.6 +/- 4.7, respectively) were worse in the HCQ group compared to the FAV and control groups. Conclusion: This study found echocardiographic evidence of subclinical cardiac involvement in both the HCQ and FAV groups compared to the controls. However, HCQ treatment was associated with an increased risk of biventricular subclinical systolic dysfunction in COVID-19 survivors compared with FAV treatment.

ABSTRACT

PurposeAn interaction between emerging technologies (ETs) for facility management (FM) activities and stakeholder skills is necessary to promote the optimization of FM performance. Previous studies do not show strategies for the selection of ETs in FM considering the technological competencies of stakeholders. Thus, this study analyzes the interactions between ETs and FM from the perceptions of Brazilian professionals, identifying the most appropriate and effective technological solutions, based on a broad literature review. Design/methodology/approachThe steps of the methodology are as follows: systematic literature review (SLR);detailing the ETs for FM;online questionnaire based on SLR findings;sample of Brazilian FM professionals;statistical treatment;and discussion. FindingsResults indicate wireless sensor network, Internet of Thing, building information modeling and Big Data as ETs in FM with greater potential for optimization in the performance of FM activities, from survey respondents. Research limitations/implicationsThe scope of possible findings may have been biased, considering the small number of research participants and current transformations resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g. changes to standard operating procedures). Practical implicationsThe results ensure greater security to facility managers in the effective implementation of ETs in FM activities. Originality/valueThe research explores the published studies and the consultation with Brazilian FM professionals in the selection of ETs.

ABSTRACT

We explore the challenges of teaching "hardware-embedded Robotic Operating System (ROS) skills" online in a lockdown situation to participants through a hands-on competition. Teamwork is a vital skill in solving modern engineering problems. During Covid-19 lockdown situations, the interaction between teammates significantly reduced compared to regular times. This prompted us to design an engineering problem statement with scaffolding that improves engineering education learning efficacy. A total of 465 teams (1860 participants) were introduced to a problem statement comprising of a autonomous robot navigation, manipulation and a perception task for an indoor unmanned ground vehicle. We study the performance of teams based on several factors such as participant's score, task's difficulty level, number of resources given and the nature of online sessions by instructors. We found the scaffolding approach helped teams in implementing a solution by exploring alternative methods and thus their knowledge. © ISLS.

ABSTRACT

Background The COVID-19 pandemic poses a major challenge for patients with chronic disease as well as their care. In particular, multiprofessional and multidisciplinary care of patients with lymphedema as well as prevention of complications and exacerbations appear significantly impaired. The aim of this study was to present the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the life satisfaction of lymphedema patients and to provide a patient perspective on healthcare provision. Methods 100 patients of a lymphedema outpatient clinic were interviewed about the use of health services, therapies and their personal situation during the pandemic. The SWLS (Satisfaction with Life Scale) was used to evaluate life satisfaction. Results The SWLS decreased from 24.5 +/- 6.7 SD pre-pandemic to 21.4 +/- 7.4 SD during the pandemic (p < 0.0001;r= -0.58). There was a trend toward fewer physician visits with increased incidence of complications. Lymphedema-typical non-physician health services showed significantly reduced access rates. Telemedical services were well accepted. Conclusion The subjective quality of life of patients with chronic lymphedema decreased significantly and with a strong effect. This underlines that this group is particularly vulnerable to problems concerning health care during a pandemic and therefore require additional care.
